connections- in depth research(Rebecca)

I found many connections during my research. One of them was the link between the book 1984, the movie V for Vendetta and the song 1812 Overture. The link starts from the book 1984 that is about a man who is in society ruled by an oppressive government that is in a Russian communist style that  promotes obedience and gets rid of all things that would give someone a reason to question their life, even going to the extent of choosing who you will marry and when you will have kids. This story is the grandfather of all dystopian stories. V for Vendetta is a movie that was based on the same idea as 1984, the difference is that there is a symbol who becomes the voice of the silenced people and invokes rebellion, the man from 1984 is in the same situation but he lets his hate become overrun in fear because he lacks the commitment to move forward and he finds something to lose. In V for Vendetta the man uses the song 1812 overture as a symbol of defeating oppression. Tchaikovsky 1812 overture was used as a song to symbolize Russia's defense against Napoleon's invasion, it is now synonymous with anarchists because it is a symbol of triumph over an oppressive force. In the world of 1984 music like that would have been blacklisted and listening to it would have been a luxury that the main character would have indulged in.The Guy Fawkes mask in V for Vendetta is also used as a symbol for protesters and rioters in the real world and has links with the infamous hacker group known as anonymous.

Another connection I found was the close link between  Anger and Insanity in the manga I read, in allot of them they used similar story concepts and it is very far spread. Many well known anime/manga use this theme because it is popular with teenage girls, the tall brooding and handsome character that has existed within plots for a very long time. This is also a thing in movies as well but it is not done to the same extent.the ones below are a small amount of a large group.

Anger-Expression

Music

For music there are many examples of anger because it is a common outlet for people’s emotions and is a medium made for people to express themselves through creative lyrics or a moving beat. Anger has a single genre that is mostly dedicated to that feeling, rock music is the genre that has the most songs about anger and was a popular outlet for different movements in history and presenting ideas that were considered heavy in a straightforward way .The thing that works about music is the fact that it communicates on a deeper level than normal speech, the thing that doesn't work is when the music’s message is taken in the wrong way or not understood at all.

Most of songs about anger also come from a deep place within the artist, it is a representation of their struggles or the things they are dealing with at this moment. One of the things that music has going for it is that it still touches people even if the zeitgeist has changed, this is something that can weaken a movie or TV show, if you watch it in the wrong time period it can mean something completely different, this comes for the context of the time the piece was made in.

Here are some songs that I know of that have a strong feeling of hate about them.

experiment-Making rules(Rebecca)

Expressive Painting

After seeing people painting to express their anger during the support groups while using the rule don’t paint with a brush. I tried to reproduce this experiment but I changed the rule to become different things. The reason I chose to do this was because I felt that this experiment catered towards both anger and expression. I wanted to make sure that I focused on making a rule on this experiment because the original had a rule on it to start with. The thing that works for this experiment is the fact that it is a pure form of expression and a way to show anger with allot of flexibility. The thing that doesn't work is not everyone is able to express them selves through painting but after a while people can try. The thing I would change next time would be to try to break some rules I had made.

The way I was painting was very different from the way the people in the support groups painted, they did more aggressive looking strokes when they put their anger into their painting. My work by comparison is rather calm by comparison, this must be because I see anger in a different way than most people. I think that this is my most powerful research result because it takes both my words fully, it fits with my manifesto and expressive art comes from your own personal context (how you see the world around you)

Rule: only use red and black strokes

Rule: keep your brush moving for 5 minutes

Rule: you can only use splotches of colour, no strokes

Research-Field (Rebecca)

After talking about the Ethical repercussions of talking to people randomly on the street I went to talk to the social workers at Child Youth and Family in Onehunga, they referred me to three support groups that were held in local churches. Sadly I was not allowed to take photos or mention were exactly they were or what group they were at because the social workers wanted to protect the people who needed their help. The small details are in my book but overall I took part in the group work and I asked the people a question.

There were many different activities at the support groups, one was yoga and breath exercises, this didn't seem to help some people who were not comfortable with it, another activities were playing table tennis and basketball. One of the most interesting activities that took place was the painting that one group did and they had a rule were they were not allowed to use a brush. The reason they put that rule was not to suppress them but to allow them to express themselves, out of all of the activities they had this was the one that went with the word expression, on top of that they had things like group talks and diaries for the people to write down their problems as a story was another interesting way of dealing with stress and one person would slash their book every time they would think of getting angry.

I also asked people three questions: what makes you angry, it can be large or small; how do you cope with it and what do you think of anger. This is what I got as some of my answers most did not want
me to share their story but some did so here they are.

When people think that they can push me around it makes me angry but I try to write down my problems. I think anger is the enemy; it turns me into a fool

When others don’t try to change their situation, I deal with it by reminding myself that I have no right to tell others what to do, I think of anger as a monster that changes people demons.

I’m angry myself for letting my son down and not being there for my friends, I deal with it everyday. I think anger has its place in the world.

I’m angry at the state of the world that people are abusing for their own selfish needs. I deal with the anger by rallying the people and supporting protests, anger is your own selfishness taking hold on you.

I am angry at my son for choosing to leave his people without any thought of what happens to people who were left behind. I don’t talk to him and I think that anger is a feeling you cant ignore.

I am angry at myself at being so weak, I found that painting was a good way to deal with things, i think anger is a part of you that u just need to deal with.

I get angry when people don’t live up to expectations. I deal with it by not trusting others so they don’t kill my hopes. I think anger is important because it gives you the drive to rise to the top.

I get angry when my students don’t listen to me, I deal wit it by going for a run to clear my head. I think anger is a good thing because it gives us the power to speak up and the courage to challenge.

I become angry when people cut me off in traffic and talk with a mocking tone, I yell at them to get rid of my anger. I think anger is something that will get you no matter what.

I become angry at people who think they are better than others, I deal with it by dragging them down to my level. I think anger is just another thing in life.

I get angry at sports when my favorite team starts losing, I deal with it by yelling and screaming at the TV, i think anger is a thing that makes you human.

I get angry at games when they are being bullshit or I have very bad luck, I deal with it by rage quitting  and punching my chair. I think anger is a part of growing up.

I get angry at people who turn against me. I deal with it by making sure they regret beings born and anger is a good way of seeing who is hungry to move forward.

Feminists make me angry due to their pushy nature and their over sensitivity to everything on top of all their shouting. I deal with it by avoiding them at all costs and I think that you shouldn't let anger get a hold on you.

I get angry at my co-workers when they don’t do their own work so I have to do it, I need to live with this because I need the job, I think anger has no place in your life if you want to be strong and move forward.

I am angry at my friend for cheating on me, I dealt with it by never talking to them again. I think anger is something that helps you deal with your problems.

surface research(Rebecca)

Breaking bad is T.V show about  a man named Walter White condemned by cancer so he resorts to drugs to pay for it. He starts off as a fearful man but as his empire grows he starts to become arrogant and with the power he holds and becomes a tyrant. With arrogance comes anger at anyone who apposes that person. History has shown this time and time again with great rulers such as kings of England who looked down on others and crushing usurpers. A famous example would be Caligula who was angry at everyone who had better standing than him, even the gods, this is like what happens to  Walter, once he starts to rule his drug empire he turns into a vindictive mastermind who’s anger is intense and calm.
The change from being a honest straight forward science teacher to becoming a criminal mastermind is intriguing and shows how honesty can turn into anger and deceit when introduced to an environment were that is the bread and butter to surviving. You first see him start to change when he kills a man and then he gets more and more and more daring as his fear changes into anger.  The next turning point is when he challenges a drug lord and takes them down by trying to poison him,  this shows his confidence slowly rising are he starts to feel his anger towards others growing. The biggest turning point is when he takes out a master criminal. He loses all hesitation and all mercy and becomes a cold blooded criminal who hates anyone who opposes him. Eventually his anger reaches so high that he completes all of his objectives. This is an example of how anger can become a driving force to move you towards your goals.  After a while though he is consumed by the anger of others.
The thing that I learned from observing this TV show was that I was rooting for a bad guy as long as he was unsure of him self and showed little to no hatred. Sympathy causes people to respond much better to others but when he becomes angry and resentful that all changes. The thing that woks is the progression of the character  and the way they characters interact with each other. The thing that didn't work was the way they managed to sell drugs without much resistance .

Walter at the start of the show, doesn't express his anger.

Walter as he starts to shift and show his anger and express himself more but still contained

Walter expressing his anger with little constraint  left

Cold blooded mastermind with no constraint, expresses his opinions and anger freely and invokes fear in those who oppose him

Another source of anger in this show is Walters partner Jesse. His anger is expressed by his continues use of the word “bitch” that he uses more than I do in a year. His anger stems from his life choices failing him and this is reflected through the way he treats life. As his anger subsides he starts to bring his life back into order, this is the opposite of Walter so he is a good contrast. This support character is important to show how anger and ambition can ruin you. When it comes to expression Jesse is allot more expressive  through his actions and his vocabulary but Walters anger is expressed through him breaking the rules of society.

Last second changes(Rebecca)

While installing I found that my idea didn't work as well as I thought it did because it required me to regulate what was happening on the canvass, that is when you suggested that I didn't actually need anyone to interact with my board because it is a representation of my field research and an extension of an experiment that I did. I did the painting that was going to be done by the people at open day and I crossed out the rules and put it on the ground instead of the wall because having things on the ground lying against the wall goes against the rules of gallery presentation and the context of the work is that of a expression of anger so it doesn't make sense to have a rule restrict the idea so I crossed out the rules to extend on the idea of expression of anger. I left the paint I used to paint one board by the base of the boards to give the idea that the viewer can add their own anger to the board, I left one board without paint but sadly someone in class painted fuck you on it while I was in the computer labs so I didn't have time to fix it so It is the expression of someone’s anger at me.

I think these changes fit my manifesto and my researches allot more. I think my installment is a good example of my field research and also a great example of research strategies, namely breaking a rule. The idea behind the work and its context are simple and it doesn't need to make sense since everyone perceives anger differently.
